The Honeymoon May Be Over for Trump and Musk

Flag in distress

Less than a month into Donald Trump’s return to the presidency, the damage to the economy, international relations, and American democracy is undeniable. His administration, propped up by the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)—an agency spearheaded by Trump’s loyalist, Elon Musk—has taken a scorched-earth approach to governance. What was marketed as a bold new vision for cutting government waste has instead resulted in mass layoffs, market crashes, and the rapid erosion of U.S. credibility on the world stage.

The stock market has been in freefall for two straight days, a direct result of reckless policy decisions, with no signs of stopping. Inflation, already at a historic high, continues to rise unchecked, while tens of thousands of workers have lost their jobs in the wake of DOGE’s aggressive cost-cutting measures. Trump and Musk’s so-called “efficiency initiative” is little more than an excuse for gutting essential government functions, and the consequences are mounting. Economists predict that the upcoming jobs report in March will reveal unemployment at its highest point in years, signaling an inevitable slide into recession—and, if unchecked, a full-blown depression.

Starve the Beast—Until It’s Dead

At the heart of this disaster is the long-held conservative strategy known as “Starve the Beast”—a policy designed to cut government funding under the guise of fiscal responsibility, ultimately forcing the elimination of social programs, regulatory agencies, and public infrastructure. Past Republican administrations have flirted with this approach, but Trump and Musk have taken it to a dangerous extreme.

DOGE’s aggressive dismantling of government agencies has left essential services gutted, from housing assistance to food security programs. The elimination of regulatory oversight has thrown entire industries into chaos. The tech sector, which Musk himself helped dominate, has been hit particularly hard, as regulatory uncertainty and funding cuts have led to mass layoffs and investment pullouts.

Rather than making government “efficient,” Trump’s DOGE agency is ensuring that government simply doesn’t function at all. And with no safety nets in place, working-class Americans are being left to fend for themselves while the ultra-wealthy insulate themselves from the chaos they created.

The United States Has Become a Global Embarrassment

The consequences of Trump’s reckless governance extend far beyond the economy. On the world stage, the United States’ credibility has been shredded in record time. Trump’s public coziness with Vladimir Putin has not only weakened America’s standing among its allies but has also directly undermined Ukraine’s sovereignty. His administration failed to invite Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to so-called “peace talks,” effectively handing Russia control over the negotiation process. It is an act of betrayal that European allies and NATO leaders see as nothing short of capitulation.

For decades, the United States has positioned itself as the leader of the free world. Now, in less than a month, Trump has thrown that legacy away. Allies no longer trust America to uphold its commitments, while adversaries are exploiting the power vacuum. With no clear diplomatic strategy, no investment in international alliances, and a total disregard for geopolitical stability, the U.S. is rapidly losing relevance—and power.

A Recession—and Then a Depression

With the economy in chaos, government services in shambles, and global confidence in the U.S. economy tanking, the next phase of this disaster is already unfolding. The country is barreling toward a debt default on March 3rd, and Trump has shown no willingness to negotiate a responsible solution. Instead, his administration continues to treat the crisis as a political game, prioritizing performative bluster over real economic action.

If the U.S. defaults, global markets will react swiftly and severely. The dollar’s value will collapse, unemployment will skyrocket, and credit markets will freeze. What begins as a recession will quickly spiral into a depression—one of our own making. The pain will be felt most acutely by working- and middle-class Americans, while Trump and his inner circle shield themselves from the consequences.

The Damage May Be Irreversible

For years, Trump and his enablers have painted government as the enemy, but their reckless pursuit of destruction for destruction’s sake has gone beyond politics. They are ensuring that the very foundations of governance, stability, and economic security cease to exist. The impact of their policies will not be easily undone. Even if a competent administration replaces them, it will take years—possibly decades—to rebuild the trust, stability, and security that Trump and Musk have actively dismantled in just a few short weeks.

The honeymoon is over, and the country is waking up to a nightmare. The question now isn’t whether we will recover, but how much devastation we will have to endure before real action is taken to stop this downward spiral.
